Toronto Star closes online comments

Toronto Star announced it would turn off commenting functions on thestar.com effective December 16, 2015. The Toronto daily newspaper plans to showcase reader comments on social media and via its Letters to the Editor section in an attempt to “foster more insightful and meaningful conversations among readers and newspaper staff.”

Editor Michael Cooke explains that the paper hopes to, “highlight the most thoughtful, insightful and provocative comments from readers and to inspire discussions across other platforms.” Cooke also notes in an article on thestar.com that the newspaper will be launching new reader comment campaigns in the New Year.
