This week marks the 79th annual celebration of National Newspaper Week. This week’s festivities kicked off on Sunday October 6 and will run until Saturday October 12, when we also celebrate International Carrier Appreciation Day.
In addition to hundreds of newspapers running a national print newspaper campaign this week, we have seen newspapers across the country celebrating in many different ways:
- In Prince Rupert the Northern View rewarded readers with a special contest to win tickets to a Rampage game and a special video highlighting their engagement with their community.
- Metroland papers ran editorial features highlighting how newspapers connect with their communities with stories like this one and this one.
- The Squamish Chief ran an opinion piece highlighting National Newspaper Week and posted to their Twitter and Instagram accounts.
- La Liberté celebrated National Newspaper Week with an editorial piece and the start of a campaign to highlight some of their readers and advertisers.
Social media influencers are also showing their support across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Check out #NationalNewspaperWeek and #NewspapersMatter for hundreds of messages of support or visit News Media Canada’s social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
