Huron County newspapers enter digital domain

Copies of historical newspapers from several communities in Huron County, in Ontario, are now available in electronic format, as part of a wider digitization program taking place in many communities across Canada.

A few weeks ago, Newspapers Canada highlighted a similar project currently being undertaken by Libraries Nova Scotia.

The desire to have historical newspapers digitized is not just a boon for history buffs. Instead, it underscores the medium’s long-standing importance as an invaluable instrument of social and cultural capital.

At the moment, four community newspapers have been fully-digitized. By the time this project is completed, more than a dozen more publications should be available electronically.
